Our client is an award-winning coffee company with a difference; a social enterprise supporting people out of homelessness through award winning coffee.
They aim to produce and serve great tasting coffee with 100% of the profits supporting people who have experienced homelessness to get back on their feet. Providing training, employment paying the Living Wage and support with housing, finances, and therapy to help people experiencing homelessness move forward.

They are now looking for an experienced Sous Chef to help deliver an exceptional menu that complements their brand and amazing coffee. If you love people, are self-sufficient, an adaptive learner, reliable and committed to making a difference, then read on.

Your role will require you to work closely with the Head Chef and will include a mixture of menu planning, food preparation, kitchen management and upholding health, safety, and cleanliness standards.

The role is based at in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford. The site includes the café, separate event spaces, a large amount of outdoor seating, gardens and a takeaway hatch. This is their first site with a full kitchen, serving delicious breakfasts and a vibrant lunch menu, alongside a selection of cakes, pastries, and sandwiches, all our dishes are made from scratch using high quality fresh ingredients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation of food using fresh ingredients for the café, event catering and takeaway hatch.
  • Supporting the Head Chef with the development of the pre-existing menus.
  • Ensuring that service is carried out in a smooth and prompt manner.
  • Maintaining the excellent standards of service.
  • Ensuring that maintenance and cleanliness of the kitchen is upheld to the highest standards, reporting any issues to the Head Chef.
  • Managing stock rotation, ordering and deliveries from multiple suppliers.
  • Remaining customer focused at all times, being approachable and willing to exceed expectations.
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties requested by management.
  • Acting as kitchen lead in the absence of the Head Chef

Core Skills Required

  • At least two years previous experience in a commercial kitchen role.
  • To be organised, punctual, and reliable.
  • Ability to work closely with the Head Chef and to lead a small team of chefs.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and take control when needed.
  • A good understanding of current food trends served in cafes and casual dining settings.
  • A passion for creating delicious nutritional and seasonal dishes.
  • A keen eye for food presentation.
  • A strong management head with a good understanding of what it takes to manage a kitchen
  • Pride in achieving the highest levels of cleanliness and health & safety.
  • Ability to thrive in a fun and inclusive working environment.
  • Experience in baking and patisserie would be a most welcome benefit.
  • Experience in mentoring others would also be beneficial but not essential as part of the ambitious plans is to include setting up a training scheme for people that are experiencing homelessness to work in kitchens.
